The high school and progressional Track and Field scene has had some drama in the past few weeks. From Noah Lyles, to Issam Asinga, I am going to explain to you all that you need to know about this recent blowup in Track and Field media attention.
Just four days ago Noah Lyles was crowned as the 100 meter dash champion at the World Athletics Championships with a blazing time of 9.83 seconds. This time was not only world class, but it came as a surprise to many as Lyles is most notably known for being a 200 meter sprinter. This was even more surprising because many people did not even think Lyles stood a chance in the 100 meter dash. His defining attributes are his top speed and final kick.
While these are the reason why he is the greatest American 200 meter runner, he lacks the elite start that characterizes many of the 100 meter greats. Nonetheless, Lyles proved everyone wrong by being named the 100 meter champion in 2023 and changing the 2024 season predictions.
Issam Asinga had the Track and Field world in the palm of his hand after crushing the high school 100 meter record, but will his PED usage ruin his gift-wrapped elite career? After running a 9.89 second 100 meter dash at just 18 years old he was thought to be the future of World Athletics Track and Field, and he was until he tested positive for GW1516, a banned substance, on July 18th. He was quickly given a provisional suspension and is awaiting further consequences.
For such a young athlete with a one-of-a-kind talent, it is tough to see all of his incredible achievements nullified due to his banned substance use. We can only hope that his suspension is quick and he can get back on the track in no time!
