Preseason Preview: Green Bay Packers
Written By: Lucas Regal, of Swish Tribune
For the first time in almost 20 years, the Packers' QB1 is someone not named Aaron Rodgers. The big question this season for Green Bay is: How good is Jordan Love? The last time the Packers made a big quarterback switch, they went from hall-of-famer to an even better hall-of-famer. It would be utterly shocking if they struck gold with a QB for the third time in a row. So what do we know about Jordan Love right now? He was the 26th pick of the first round for Green Bay back in 2020 and hasn't had much game experience since then. He's only started one game in his career which is unusually low for a first-round pick going into his fourth year in the league. The upside is that he's been learning from one of the best quarterbacks of all time in Rodgers, so hopefully he's picked up a couple things during his time as a backup.
The rest of the offense has a lot of question marks as well. Christian Watson will be going into his second year as the WR1 for the Packers. He had some great games last year, but he'll need to take a big jump if he's going to be able to fill the Davonte Adams-sized hole that was prevalent in a team that went 8-9. The Packers' second-round pick receiver Jayden Reed is exciting though. He's athletic, aggressive, and has a chance to be a big part of this Packers offense for years to come. And let's not forget about Aaron Jones. The veteran running back had the most rushing yards of his career last year with over 1100, and with a rookie quarterback, I wouldn't be surprised to see his role increase.
The Green Bay defense was nothing special last year coming in at 17th in opponents PPG. They still have potentially the best cornerback in the league in Jaire Alexander and some beasts in the front seven with Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark. Apart from those guys and Darnell Savage at safety, there's not a whole lot here to show that this defense can carry a rookie QB to a winning season.
I predict a losing season, but it all depends on how good Jordan Love is. Going game by game:
Week 1 vs Bears: L
Week 2 vs Falcons: W
Week 3 vs Saints: W
Week 4 vs Lions: L
Week 5 vs Raiders: L
Week 7 vs Broncos: L
Week 8 vs Vikings: L
Week 9 vs Rams: W
Week 10 vs Steelers: W
Week 11 vs Chargers: L
Week 12 vs Lions: L
Week 13 vs Chiefs: W
Week 14 vs Giants: L
Week 15 vs Bucs: W
Week 16 vs Panthers W
Week 17 vs Vikings: L
Week 18 vs Bears: W
This gives them another 8-9 season just like last year. It's hard to predict when you have no idea how good the team's quarterback is, so I could see some of these games going either way. For Packers fans, this sadly may be a rare year with a losing record. But if Jordan Love proves to be a Franchise QB, no matter how many wins they get, this is a successful season for Green Bay.
