Preseason Preview: San Fransisco 49ers
The 49ers have chosen Brock Purdy to be their starting quarterback this year. They have also assigned the backup role to Sam Darnold. With these decisions Trey Lance was left out of the mix and the 49ers decided to trade him to the cowboys for a 4th round pick. This will be good for Purdy as it shows that the front office trusts him with the keys to the franchise.
Purdy got hurt last year in the NFC championship game and had to get surgery done over the offseason. The 49ers went on to lose that game after backup quarterback Josh Johnson also got hurt and they had to turn to Christian McCaffrey to play the position. Many think they would’ve won that game if it wasn’t for the injuries, but that will remain a mystery.
San Fransisco goes into the season with most of the same players that they had last year. They have lost some pieces on the defensive end, but still have the opportunity to have a shut down defense even with Nick Bosa sitting out. Bosa has not been at training camp as he awaits a new contract, but the 49ers defense should be fine to start the season without him. Additionally, all their key offensive weapons will return. Their wide receivers include Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk who are both explosive and speedy. Tight end George Kittle is also back and healthy and should continue to be a constant in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Running back Christian McCaffrey will also be back and will be explosive and take the pressure off of Purdy.
SF also has one of the best offensive lines in the league which will serve Purdy well in his first season as starter while also helping McCaffrey as they create more big running lanes for him. Linebackers Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner will help to wreck the run game and man the middle of the defense while the backend consists of Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga. These two will guard the opposing team’s top receivers and will help to shut them down.
This 49ers team will have high aspirations as they look to get back to the NFC championship game and win it this time. If Brock Purdy can do similar things to what he did at the end of last year, this team will be in a pretty good spot and nobody will want to face this stout defense come playoff time.
