What is Next for the Golden State Warriors? Is This the End of a Dynasty?
A demoralizing 118 - 94 loss in the play-in game to the Sacramento Kings has left basketball fans around the world questioning, what will come next for the Golden State Warriors? Throughout the entire regular season, the Warriors have been at best, mediocre. They finished the regular season at 46-36. Even though the win to loss ratio doesn't look that bad, they only finished as the 10 seed, considering that the western conference is stacked this year. Then, to top off the disappointing season, they were crushed in the play in game. The so-called "big three" were one of the main reasons for the Warriors struggles. Draymond Green was in and out of trouble throughout the season as he kept getting suspended. These suspensions not only affected Draymond, but clearly brought down the team chemistry. Klay Thompson showed a lot of regression too, as he inconsistently averaged 17.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, and 2.3 apg with mediocre shooting splits. To conclude his down season, he went 0-10 from the field and 0-7 from three in the play in game, which could be his final game as a Warrior. Klay Thompson is a free agent this offseason and has been rumored to go elsewhere such as the Magic or Mavs. It was clear this year that the Warriors were very Stephen Curry dependent as the supporting cast didn't help out much. With Stephen Curry at 36, and Klay and Draymond both at 34, age is also becoming a distinct problem. So, the question every fan is wondering right now is clear: Is the Warrior dynasty coming to an end?
However, some might argue that the Golden State Warriors just had a down year and will bounce back. Curry's age hasn't come into effect yet as he continues to be a superstar in this league. If Draymond stays out of trouble and Klay resigns and plays good again, the Warriors might still have a few years under their belt. With that said, there are many variables to the Warriors getting their spark back, such as Klay returning, them staying healthy and old age not effecting their quality of play.
In conclusion, many say the Warriors are washed and it is time to rebuild, and others argue that they still have one or two more years to bring home another championship. However, everyone in the basketball community can agree on one thing, the Warriors dynasty is coming to an end. If it comes this offseason, or in a couple years, they are just not the same players that they used to be. The Warrior franchise accomplished many things in their dynasty era such as having the best regular season record of all time by going 73-9 in the 2015-16 season, winning four championships and being one of the most satisfying and fun teams to watch in all of sports. All in all, even though it might be coming to an end, the Curry led Warriors are one of the best teams assembled in sports history.
