Knicks Get Their Revenge

The New York Knicks managed to get it done in the Garden with a comeback win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night. In the previous meeting, the 76ers came out on top in an upsetting 4th quarter-comeback double-digit win over the Knicks on Christmas Day. However, the Knicks were determined to get their revenge.

Notable injuries caused the Knick's to look to their deep bench. RJ Barrett ruled-out last minute. Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks starting center, who has been out for the last couple of weeks was ineligible for tonight's games. The Knicks have been back and forth all season but have struggled to win games recently. The Knicks were underdogs without Robinson, giving Embiid an advantage.

The first quarter of the game was dominated by the 76ers, who grabbed a hold of a very solid lead of twenty-one points. Joel Embiid and De’Anthony Melton contributed to the 76ers offensive efforts, scoring a combined 17 points. Despite the 76ers’ early success, the Knicks managed to end the quarter with a strong run, reducing the 76ers lead to 11. The late success in the firsts led to a momentum shift for the Knicks. An 8-0 run by New York cut the 76ers’ lead down to three. The Knicks got inside and found a spark with Jalen Brunson and Quentin Grimes scoring 11 points and Evan Fournier scoring eight points off the bench. However, the 76ers struggled on the offensive end, going scoreless from beyond the arc. The 76ers held on to their lead and went into halftime with only a two-point advantage.  The Knicks had been the only team not to win a game trailing at halftime with a record of 0-11.

The Knicks took advantage coming out of halftime. Julius Randle hit a three-pointer, giving the Knicks the lead.  After the Knicks gained momentum early, the 76ers managed to end the quarter with a three-point lead, 79-76. A tight contest between the two teams, neither team managed to find an edge. Tyrese Maxey two minutes of scoreless basketball for Philly with a successful And-1. Miles McBride, Evan Fournier, and Obi Toppin contributed to the Knicks' efforts, all hitting huge three-pointers late in the fourth. Despite the 76ers’ efforts to attempt a comeback, the Knicks secured the victory with a final score of 108-97.

The main takeaway was Evan Fournier. The 12-year vet connected on multiple three-point attempts to give the Knicks a lead in the fourth. He scored 17 on the night. This was his season high as he has only seen the floor vaguely this season but managed to get 24 minutes of playing time. Fournier should not be expected to perform consistently at this level, though he typically does this once or twice a year or when he starts against the Celtics.

What does this game mean? This question is unanswerable as the Knicks have been unreliable, with ups and downs and flashes of being a contending team occasionally. This game was a much-needed win from the New York Knicks.
