Preseason Preview: NY Giants
Last season was very, very good for the New York Giants. Even if Giants fans didn’t love how it ended, to say that the season
was a failure would be about the opposite of what happened. The Giants opened the season 7-2 and finished with a winning record of 9-7-1. The Giants ended the regular season more as expected by getting blown out a few times and a close loss to the Vikings, who a few weeks later the Giants beat in a more important playoff game. Although it didn’t matter much because the Giants got wrecked by their division rivals, the Eagles, with big-time Jalen Hurts.
The Giants are still building with Daniel Jones, who took a significant step toward becoming an elite NFL Quarter Back and earned himself a new contract for 160 million, four years this past April. While the Giants made a few moves this offseason, their major signing was former Raiders and Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller. He should take a substantial step towards helping build the passing game and likely be Jone’s top receiver. Saquan Barkley, the franchise star, has to hold out just to get a one-year, 11-million-dollar contract. With the ongoing debate in the NFL, running backs have had it tough. (Read for more: https://swishtribune.blogspot.com/2023/07/the-running-back-crisis-is-real.html) Barkley was no luckier and will have to prove himself once again this season that he deserves a long time deal. Luckily for Giants fans, this will most likely turn out to be positive, as he will get major usage and perform well. The top newcomers are Bobby Okereke, A’Shawn Robinson, John Michael Schmitz, and Deonte Banks. Other signings are below:
2023 Draft: 1 (24th overall) CB Deonte Banks, Maryland; 2 (57) C John Michael Schmitz, Minnesota; 3 (73) WR Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee; 5 (172) RB Eric Gray, Oklahoma; 6 (209) CB Tre Hawkins, Old Dominion; 7 (243) DT Jordan Riley, Oregon; 7 (254) S Gervarrius Owens, Houston.
Free-agent signings: LB Bobby Okereke (from Indianapolis), 4 years, $40M; DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (from Tampa Bay), 3 years, $12M; DE A’Shawn Robinson (from LA Rams), 1 year, $5M; WR Jamison Crowder (from Buffalo), 1 year, $1.32M; CB Bobby McCain (from Washington), 1 year, $1.32M; CB Amini Oruwariye (from Detroit), 1 year, $1.23M; WR Jeff Smith (from NY Jets), 1 year, $1.2M; G Sean Harlow (from Arizona), 1 year, $1.08M; DE Tashawn Bower (from Las Vegas), 1 year, $1.08M; C JC Hassenauer (from Pittsburgh), 1 year, $1.04M; RB James Robinson (from New England), 1 year, $1.01M.
For the Giants to improve this year, they need to defend better on the inside and utilize their receivers, but with a demanding schedule, that looks hard for them to do. I predict 7-10 this season, but that is as a Giants fan with optimism.
