Preseason Preview: Tennessee Titans

 Tennessee Titans Season Preview

By Evan Ostrander

The Tennessee Titans are coming off of a disappointing season in which they failed to make the playoffs after ending the season on a seven game losing streak without Ryan Tannehill. This losing streak included a loss to the Texans in a very winnable game that pretty much told the world that the Titans weren’t legit. Many point the blame for these losses on rookie Quarterback Malik Willis and think that they will be much better this season with Tannehill healthy, but I disagree. Ryan Tannehill adds very little to the Tennessee Titans offense besides handing the ball off well and the occasional checkdown pass. The Tennessee Titans should not be relying on a game manager to keep them mediocre, and instead, they should be looking to Will Levis as their Quarterback of the future.

Despite this, the Titans will be starting the season with Tannehill, so they should be able to stay serviceable as long as Henry hasn’t seen much more regression with age. This team is coming into this season with a heavily improved receiving core, picking up Deandre Hopkins and letting Treylon Burks and Chig Okonkwo develop for another year, so if Tannehill can keep up his performance of recent years, then this should be a much better season for the Titans. Despite this, the Titans are aging on both ends of the field, and their star power will only be able to take them so far with a weak offensive line and Quarterback.

This Titans defense, on paper, is strong enough to compete with the best, boasting star talent such as Kevin Byard and Jeffrey Simmons, and they could have something special with some of their young DBs such as Kristian Fulton and Caleb Farley. On top of this, they have a lot of good, not great, players to fill out the rest of their defense, so with the right execution this defense could be scary.

Despite the stellar defense and recently dominant run game, with Ryan Tannehill as the starting QB, I expect the Titans to go 9-8, but if they figure it out at QB, don’t be surprised if the Titans are a sneaky team to look out for going into the playoffs.
