Are the Giants Really That Bad?

Last Sunday, the New York Giants were the only team in the NFL to not score a point in Week 1. Not only that, but they lost in a devastating 40-0 shutout to the Dallas Cowboys. How does this happen to a team that won a road playoff game last year and only improved? I'm going to break down the game and find out what the chances are for G-Men in the coming weeks.

On their first drive of the game, the Giants looked impressive. They were moving the ball with ease. Saquan Barkley looked good, as he usually does. The mixed running attack of Barkley and Daniel Jones got them all the way to Dallas's 8-yard line. At this point, it was looking like we were in for a great game. That's when Andrew Thomas had a false start, something he didn't do all of last year. Then the rookie Center, John Michael Schmitz, gave a bad snap which resulted in a 10-yard loss. After that, the Giants were forced to kick a field goal, which was blocked and taken back for a TD. Right away, the Giants got back on offense and had a 3 and out. The next time on the field, Jones threw a pick 6, and there's no point in explaining anything after that as the Giants offense did not score, and the defense gave up 24 more points.

As a Giants fan, I want to find the bright side here, so I'm going to look at their first drive of the game. They were unstoppable. In my opinion, a blocked kick for a touchdown after a great drive is deflating to a team, and it showed. New York didn't show anything close to that first drive for the rest of the game. Once they were down 16-0, the whole team fell apart. Their energy, their spirit, all of it was gone. This falls on the former Coach of the Year, Brian Daboll. You cannot allow your team to be that easily defeated that quickly. It's simply unacceptable, and they looked pathetic.

So, the question arises: Is this the Giants team that we are going to have to endure all year? I don't think so. Last Sunday was the worst-case scenario. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. This Sunday against Arizona, I expect a dominating victory. The rushing attack will be as dominating as it was in the first drive against the Cowboys. Darren Waller will finally get involved. An easy matchup is exactly what the G-Men need after a crushing loss.

The Giants are a young team, led by a young quarterback, and they showed that on Sunday night. If they want to be successful this year, they can't allow an early deficit to completely ruin their spirits. This game was a learning experience. I still believe the Giants are a playoff-caliber team. They will show it in Arizona this Sunday.
