After coming into the FIBA World Cup as the top seed and the clear dominant force, the USA Men's Basketball team came crashing down to the boys from up North.
In the Bronze Medal game, team USA lost 127-118 to Canada. The Americans finished fourth in the FIBA World Cup for the first time since 2019. Canada was in control all game with NBA vet, Dillon Brooks putting up 39 points to lead all scorers, while SGA added 31 points and 12 assists. Knicks Guard, RJ Barrett also scored 23. This was the first time since 1936 that Canada won a medal of any sort at the FIBA World Cup. For the second consecutive World Cup, the US failed to win a medal. Out of 38 appearances this is only the seventh time that the US did not win a gold, silver, or bronze medal at the World Cup or Olympics.
The Americans were favorites coming into the tournament, and after losing three of their last four games to Lithuania, Germany, and Canada, they fell to only having a chance at bronze. Canada made the series a shocking 2-21, retaining their first win over the US since 2005. The Americans were with Brandon Ingram, Paolo Banchero, and Jaren Jackson Jr. The US was led by Timberwolves star, Anthony Edwards all tournament and Ant added 24 points leading the Americans in the loss to Canada. Austin Reaves showed his true talent in the tournament and scored 23 while Mikal Bridges also scored 19. Bridges hit the game-tying three for the US, but this was not enough for the US to hold the lead in regulation.
After fighting in overtime, the United States fell short of the young and powerful Canadian team. The US did not look sharp, with losses to Lithuania and Germany. Although these teams feature NBA players such as: Jonas Valanciunas, Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner, and Moritz Wagner, the US had a team full of all-stars. With this tough loss, sending the Americans stateside, they will use this as motivation to win in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
