Here's What We Can Learn From The Buffs Week One Win
Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, moved from Jackson State University earlier this year to the University of Colorado to help take the Buffaloes to the next level in the FBS level. Colorado came into the 2023 season unranked but under new coaching staff, the Buffs shocked the world and took down number 17, TCU on the road in Fort Worth.
Coach Prime brought some of the best recruits to Boulder from Jackson State: Both of his sons, Shedeur Sanders, Shilo Sanders, Cam'Ron Simon-Craig, Tyler Brown, Alejandro Mata, and 5-star and the number one corner back in the class of 2022, Travis Hunter. Coach Prime left such an impact on these players that they entered the transfer portal and followed the NFL great.
Coming out of high school, the 4-star recruit, Shedeur Sanders was seen as the next great product after being mentored by his dad. He showed great flashes at Jackson State, but against TCU he broke out and showed his true talent. Sanders threw for 510 yards on 38 out of 47 completions and 4 touchdowns, and a 90.6 QBR on top. Four different receivers on the offensive side of the ball for Colorado hauled in at least 100 receiving yards. Travis Hunter, the two-way receiver and defensive back, just like his mentor Deion, was able to lead the team in interceptions and receiving yards. On defense, Hunter had one interception and three tackles. On offensive, Hunter hauled in 11 passes from Sanders on 119 receiving yards with a long of 43 yards. Freshman, Dylan Edwards was explosive out of the backfield and with only 24 rushing yards, he was still able to punch the pigskin in for six on 6 rushing attempts.
Now, yes, this was definitely not the TCU team we saw in the College Football Playoff last year, but the Horned Frogs still put up a fight. TCU is still a team with great amounts of talent and NFL-level players, but the 565 yards of offense by Colorado explains the mess of TCU's defense. The Buffs experienced great disorder on defense too, as they gave up 262 rushing yards. The one Sanders not on Colorado, Junior running back Trey Sanders punched in three touchdowns for the Horned Frogs.
We can finally live in Coach Prime's world and follow the hype he and passé in Colorado have created. The Buffs stunned the world and silenced all the haters and have proved they are here to play this season. Let's see what Coach Prime and company have to offer against a gritty Nebraska team at home in Boulder.
