The Heisman Trophy: the most decorated trophy in all of college football and college sports. The Heisman is given to the most outstanding player throughout the college football season, and this season presents a tight race. As we enter the month of November, this is the time for these players to prove themselves to win the Heisman and put their name in the record books. The Heisman running is down to five, and as we continue to watch these players preform, we question, who will it be?
Caleb Williams, of USC took home the Heisman last season. Williams was a transfer from Oklahoma where he did not see much playing time in his first two seasons, but after a disappointing start from their so called "star" in Spencer Rattler, Williams took the field, and the rest was history. He then followed his former mastermind offensive coordinator, Lincoln Riley, to USC where Riley earned the head coaching job, and Williams would continue to play under him. Williams won the Heisman with 296 completions, on 448 attempts, 4,075 yards 37 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Williams and the USC offensive have been on a decline this season, with loses to Notre Dame, Utah, and most recently, Washington. These loses have knocked them out of the rankings and eliminated them from playoff contention. Yes, Williams is still putting up great number with 2,958 yards on 28 touchdowns and a QBR of 83.6, but he has 4 interceptions to his name. This is the same amount he had to conclude the season last year. Caleb Williams is out of contention for the Heisman and has disappointed this season.
Michael Penix Jr., the Senior quarterback that transferred from Indiana has bursted onto the scene and is now in the number 1 spot for the Heisman. Penix has 2,945 pass yards, 24 total touchdowns. The left-handed, Michael Vick playstyle of Penix, has showed he can deliver in primetime. After a shaky game against Arizona States, where Penix had 2 picks, and a donut for touchdowns, the Huskies held off ASU. Penix showed up against Stanford the following week with 369 yards on 4 touchdowns. MPJ showed up in a highly anticipated matchup against number 8 Oregon and took the Ducks down at home. Penix had led the Huskies to a 9-0 record and to the number 5 spot in the AP poll, just knocking on the door of the college football playoff.
Behind Penix lies, Jayden Daniels, Marvin Harrison Jr., Jordan Travis, and Bo Nix. All four guys have proven they can win this award and can stay in the running but a few sloppy games and loses have limited their chances. Daniles, the gun slinging QB for LSU has shown flashes of greatness, and the stats prove it. 2,573 pass yards, 30 touchdowns, and 521 rush yards, but loses to FSU, Ole Miss, and just last night, Alabama, Daniels is not yet there to win this award. Marvin Harrison Jr., undoubtly the best wideout in college football and will be the number one receiver selected in the draft has put on a show this season at Ohio State: 889 yards and 8 touchdowns and has led the Buckeyes to the number 1 seed in the AP poll. He has the numbers, but we will see what he does against Michigan in less than a month from now. Jordan Travis has led the FSU Seminoles to a 9-0 record and into the number 4 spot in the AP poll. With a massive win over Duke in primetime, Travis proved he can come back from being down, but the biggest task will be beating UNC for the ACC title to determine their spot in the CFP. Travis has thrown for 2,109 yards, 24 touchdowns, and rushed for 205 yards. Bo "Bodacious" Nix, as the Oregon Ducks fans call him is now competing in his fifth season and is eager to end it with a Heisman. Oregon sits at the number 6 spot in the AP poll, just behind Washinton. Is it even fair that Nix led Oregon to a near win over U-dub and threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns? Nix proved he can stay in this race with a 35-6 win over Utah and will face USC in an anticipated matchup next weekend. Bo has thrown for 2,337 yards 24 total touchdowns. He holds the highest completion percentage out of the other three quarterback with 78.3%.
The Heisman race is always fun and extremely interesting. Who will it be? Will Penix hold his ground at number one? Or can Bo Nix or Jordan Travis sneak their way up the list with big wins in the coming matchups?
