The Islanders are one of a kind in Today's NHL

The Islanders are a weird case in the NHL. They are above NHL .500, yet are viewed as a boring and unsuccessful team. They have blown the most 3rd period leads in the NHL this season and also have the most losses after regulation thus far.

This is particularly interesting considering that they have some of the best goaltending in the league. One would think that with excellent goaltending, the team would be better at holding leads, but this isn’t the case. Often the Islanders can find themselves chasing the puck. This makes the islanders players tired as the 3rd period comes around which makes it easier for a team to come back on them. This was evident in last night’s game against the hurricanes.

The islanders were severely outplayed and outshot by the hurricanes, yet entered the third period up 3-2. They had been chasing the puck all game and Carolina had controlled the pace of the game thus far. The Hurricanes probably deserved to be up at least a goal by this point, so nobody was surprised when they quickly tied it 3-3 a minute into the 3rd. Surprisingly, the Islanders were able to get a power play goal by Kyle Palmieri to go up 4-3. The Hurricanes were then able to kill another penalty after a coach’s challenge and took that momentum through the end of the game. With the puck pinned in the corner with 10 seconds left, it looked like the Islanders were going to finally win a game in which they had the lead in the 3rd period. But, the puck squirted in front of the net and Sebestian Aho was able to put home the puck with 2 seconds to make it 4-4.

Time was dire for Islanders fans as they had lost 5 straight games in overtime, but Mat Barzal was able to score a one timer to give the islanders the win. This was a huge win for the Islanders and swung the season’s momentum  back in their favor.

The islanders do have stars in Mat Barzal, Ryan Puloch, Ilya Sorokin, and Bo Horvat, but with recent injuries to the defense, the islanders will have to push even harder to get wins. I think they will be able to do it, but only time will tell.
