Why So Many Turned Down Alabama

On Wednesday, January 11th, 2024, Nick Saban announced he was retiring as head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. This meant that the football program needed to find a new head coach. Many expected this to be an easy process where Alabama could call a successful coach such as Steve Sarkisian of Texas, and give him so much money he cannot turn the job down. However, the process was anything but easy because of the expectations the program would have for whoever Nick Saban’s replacement would be.

For a guy like Steve Sarkisian, if Alabama is calling to offer him the head coaching job, it would be a disservice to his family to not at the very least be willing to hear what Alabama wants to give him. The offer Alabama gives is so important as not only is it a job offer, but it allows for Sark to go to Texas and tell them the offer he wants to stay and extend his contract.

Another thing that deterred many coaches from this job was the amount of expectations. Being the person who is the successor to Nick Saban gives so many lofty expectations. These expectations, while deserving, can result in tons of amounts of pressure. For instance, Mike Norvell, the FSU Football HC, is more than likely to stay at FSU as while the pay may be significantly better at Alabama, being the guy who is the replacement for the greatest can force too many expectations onto one individual. Not only that but why would Norvell want to go somewhere that is essentially going to not value his work when he can remain the hero at the program he is at in this moment.

All in all, despite being a highly valuable job opening, Alabama still needs to pull its weight in the hiring process as it would be wrong to take a “they need us more than we need them” approach. Once again, why go somewhere where you won’t be revealed as a coach when you can stay, make equal if not more money, and be the hero at your current program.
